The University of Liverpool is based in the city centre and has a single, 100-acre site where everything happens. It has three main faculties: Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Life Sciences and Science and Engineering.
The University of Liverpool recently placed 30th in the Times University Guide 2022 and 40th in the Guardian University Guide 2022.
The University of Liverpool is a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group, made up of leading universities around the country. It is known for those three faculties but also research and courses in engineering, chemistry, computer science and architecture.
This is a relatively large university, with over 27,000 students. Over 8,000 of those are international students and the university goes to great lengths to support every single one of them.
Thanks to a real emphasis on research, the University of Liverpool invests heavily in labs and equipment. Any student studying here is going to find themselves around cutting-edge equipment with the support of very experienced lecturers and teaching staff.

Liverpool John Moores University was originally founded way back in 1825 where it began life as the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts.
It became a university in 1992, so while it’s one of the oldest institutions in Liverpool, it’s one of the youngest universities in Liverpool.
It’s also one of the best universities in Liverpool.
Liverpool John Moores University has over 24,000 students and over 2,400 staff. It has three campuses: City Campus in Liverpool city centre, Mount Pleasant Campus, also in the city centre, and I M Marsh Campus, in Aigburth, outside the city centre.
Faculties include the Faculty of Business & Law, Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies, Faculty of Health, Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
Each is highly regarded but the areas of health, sports science, media and business are particularly sought after.
Liverpool Business School (LBS) also has an excellent reputation for delivering solid teaching across many disciplines.
Liverpool Hope University is Liverpool’s third university and is also a well-established institution dating back to 1844. It began as three Christian colleges: Saint Katharine's College, Notre Dame College and Christ's College. The three were brought together to form Liverpool Hope University in 2005.
Liverpool Hope University is a modest university with around 5,000 students and two main campuses at Hope Park and Childwall. There are smaller campuses: the Creative Campus for music, visual and performing arts in Everton and Algburth Park in St Michael's.
There is also an outdoor education centre in Snowdonia, Wales.
This uni in Liverpool is known for accounting and finance, business and management, marketing, drama, dance and performance, design and film, music, education, teacher education, conservation, food science, theology and religion and a number of other subjects.
Liverpool Hope University was ranked Gold in the 2018 Teaching Excellence Framework, one of only 5 UK universities to win the award. It was also 33rd in The Guardian leave table in 2019.
Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, LIPA, isn’t technically a university, but as one of the highest-profile performing arts schools in the country, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention it.
Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts was founded by Liverpudlian Sir Paul McCartney and a famous educator, Mark Featherstone-Witty, in 1996. It is based in Liverpool city centre on Mount Street.
The idea was to create a school specifically for performing arts and to provide foundation courses to make education accessible to all.
Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts is currently ranked #1 in the country for many of its degree courses. It was also awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework like Liverpool Hope University. That’s why it's in this list.
Courses include foundations in acting, dance and popular music and degrees in acting, applied theatre, creative technologies, dance, music, scene design and technical theatre.
The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is also technically not a university but it does have the power to award degrees like LIPA. As the first school in the world to teach and research tropical medicine, it deserves an honourable mention.
It was founded in 1898 specifically to study tropical diseases encountered by the many thousands of sailors who arrived at Liverpool’s thriving port.
The school has just over 800 students across four departments: the Department of International Public Health, Department of Tropical Disease Biology, Department of Clinical Sciences and Department of Vector Biology and is a prime choice for aspiring experts in this field.
