Sustainability

Sustainability at Sanctuary Students is a key priority and something we’re working on to try and reduce our impact on the environment.

Sustainability

Everyone has a responsibility to care for the environment and with your help, we’re hoping to become a net zero organisation.

Each of our student properties have their own green initiatives and programme that you can take part in when you live with us to make sure we’re all doing all we can to create a sustainable future and stop the climate emergency.

Our green working group

We’ve got a great team of staff from across our properties who work together to create new sustainability initiatives each term. If you have any ideas or suggestions of things you’d like to change or new ideas you’d think could make a difference to our green agenda, drop us an email at gogreen@sanctuary-students.com.

Steps you can take

Every watt of electricity and drop of water you save will make a huge difference to your carbon footprint. Check out our Green Guide (PDF 3.7MB) for some handy tips on how you can save electricity, water and energy in your student halls.

Green energy

From October 2021, our electricity supplies come from green tariffs. We’re no longer using electricity that comes from fossil fuels.

This means that the electricity we buy to power our student properties comes from renewable sources like solar panels, wind turbines and hydro power plants.

In 2020/2021, our student accommodation used 16,857,271 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, which equates to 3,930 tonnes of CO2e. By switching to green electricity, we will save at least 3,930 tonnes of CO2e, which means our electricity consumption will be carbon neutral. This is same amount of CO2 that would be absorbed by 65,500 trees in a year!
