About the University of Bradford

The University of Bradford is a research university based in the centre of Bradford in West Yorkshire. It’s a relatively new university, having been granted its charter in 1966 but began life back in 1832 as the Mechanics Institute.

The university has around 10,000 students, both undergraduate and graduate. The University of Bradford attracts a higher proportion of mature students than normal, around 30% of the student population. A further 22% of students here are international.

The university is known for engineering, computing, informatics, media, design and technology, health studies, management, law and international studies.

The University of Bradford is ranked 106th in the UK but #1 in the country for improving student’s life chances. It is also ranked in the top 50 for research, specifically technology research.

Student life in Bradford

Bradford is a scenic city at the foot of the Pennines and has a long, illustrious history. There’s a lot to see and do in the city and it’s well known for its diversity.

The city itself is a modest size with a population of around half a million people. It’s nice to walk around, picturesque thanks to old industrial buildings, has lots of historic architecture and has good shopping too.

Highlights of Bradford include Five Rise Locks, Little Germany, Saltaire, St Ives, Bronte Country, National Media Museum, Colour Museum, Peace Museum, Bolling Hall Museum, Alhambra Theatre, Bradford University's Theatre in The Mill, the Priestley Centre and St George's Hall.

Bradford is also known for live music and eating out. The diversity of the city means every cuisine from every continent is catered for, especially Pakistani, Indian, Bengali and other cuisines of the region. The city isn’t known as the Curry Capital of Britain for nothing!

Transport in Bradford

Bradford has a central location in West Yorkshire and is well connected to the rest of the country.

As a former industrial city, transport links into Preston are plentiful.

Arrive in Preston by air and you’ll need to use Liverpool or Manchester airports. Road and rail links join the three cities, so getting here should be no problem.

Preston has a large train station with intercity and local links. Both the West Coast Main Line and Avanti West Coast services stop here as well as national trains from around the country.

Preston has local and national buses running frequent services. Megabus and National Express both run services to and from Preston.

The city has good road links too with access to the M6, M61, M62, M60 and M65. Local roads are also plentiful and getting around is very straightforward.
