The University of Bolton was created from the Bolton Mechanics' Institute, which was founded in 1824. Since then, the university has grown in size and stature to become a leading UK university.

There are around 8,000 students, with the majority being undergraduates with around 1,500 postgraduates. The university is highly regarded for the quality of teaching and it’s usually within the top 50 in league tables.

The university is known for social policy, social work, architecture, engineering and civil engineering courses and enjoys a solid reputation for industry-related degrees.

While the intent is to work hard and qualify, there is a real emphasis on enjoying student life, leading a rich and interesting life here. It’s a fine balance but one the University of Bolton seems to get completely right.

Bolton is a large town on the edge of Manchester. It’s a nice town in its own right but enjoys all the benefits of having one of Britain’s largest cities on its doorstep. As you’re just 20 minutes away in Manchester, you get the best of both worlds!

The University of Bolton is in the town centre and a short walk from bus or train links to Manchester.

Things to see and do in Bolton include Bolton Steam Museum, Bolton Museum, Smithills Hall, Queen’s Park, Hall i’ th’ Wood Museum, Churchgate, Bolton Market, Bolton Town Hall, Rivington Pike, Turton Tower, Moses Gate Country Park, Doffcocker Lodge, Jumbles Country Park, Moss Bank Park and Smithills Open Farm.

Many of these are just a short distance from the University of Bolton, Bolton Interchange and bus stops ready to take you home.

Yes, our student housing is close to the University of Bolton. It’s in Manchester, around 20 minutes by bus or train from class and to everything that’s going on in town.

Our University of Bolton student accommodation is typically ensuite rooms. Most accommodation will be large rooms, double ensuite rooms and large double ensuite rooms.

They are generously proportioned, fully furnished, set inside well-maintained buildings and are fully serviced with Wi-Fi, heating, hot water and everything you’ll need.

You’ll just need to bring bedding, towels and personal items. All furniture, kitchen appliances, ironing board and other essentials are included.

You can also bring any personal items that will make your life here more pleasant. If you bring a TV, you’ll need a TV licence.

As long as we have the space and you all apply at once, we will do our very best to ensure you all share the accommodation. We know how important it can be to have friends around you when you move to a new town and completely change your life.

There are no guarantees as our accommodation is exceptionally popular, but we will always try our best.

You’ll have to pay for a TV licence if you bring your own TV. You won’t need it for watching Netflix or other IPTV channels, only if you plan on watching live TV.

Everything is controlled by your Sanctuary Student account. You can pay rent, manage requests, request repairs and do everything you need to do using your account.

We accept bank transfer, credit card, debit card and a number of electronic payment systems for rent, so you should be able to find a method that works.

We recommend booking early as Manchester is an incredibly popular city for students, and we get booked very quickly!

Bolton is a safe place for students. It’s a friendly town where people are welcoming and students are very much part of life here. There are areas you wouldn’t want to go at night, but that’s the same for any built-up area.

As long as you take practical precautions, you will be perfectly safe when studying at the University of Bolton.
