About the University of Manchester
The University of Manchester began life as the Manchester Mechanics' Institute back in 1824, but didn’t become a university until the Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and the Victoria University of Manchester merged in 2004.
The University of Manchester is a large university with over 40,000 students. Around 26,000 of those are undergraduates while the remaining 14,000 are postgraduates. It’s the third largest university in the country with the largest single campus.
The university has four main faculties: the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Professional Services and Faculty of Finances.
The university is ranked #27 in the world and is regarded as a prestigious university. It is particularly known for its research and is part of the Russell Group.

As a large city, Manchester has a lot to offer students. There’s always something going on, and both the university and our University of Manchester student accommodation are located close to the city centre and Manchester Royal Infirmary.
The University of Manchester has a huge campus with lots going on, while the city itself is lively, friendly and welcoming to students.

How do I book my student housing in Manchester?
Booking your Manchester student housing is easy! Simply select the building and accommodation type you want and hit the big red ‘Book now’ button.
Complete the simple form, pay £1 to book the room and we’ll do the rest. Once we’ve confirmed your place, we’ll walk you through the rest of the process. It’s super simple!
What bills or extras will I need to pay?
You won’t need to pay any bills or any extras! All rents are fully inclusive. That means no bills, no paying for internet, electricity, water, heating or anything else. The price you see is the price you pay.
You’ll have to pay for a TV licence if you bring your own TV. You won’t need it for watching Netflix or other IPTV channels, only if you plan on watching live TV.
Can I stay with friends in your Manchester student accommodation?
Book early, tell us who your friends are, all book at the same time and there is no reason why you couldn’t live with friends. No guarantees though. Sanctuary Students is very popular, so if you want to live with friends, you’ll need to book early!
Is Manchester safe for students?
Manchester is a large but relatively safe city. Inner city estates have the usual social and crime problems, but the city centre and the areas around our student accommodation is a nice place to be.
Take the usual precautions, don’t venture places you don’t know after dark and you’ll be fine.

Transport in Manchester
Manchester has lots of transport options and our University of Manchester student accommodation offers easy access to the city and the rest of the country.
Arrive by air into Manchester airport, the third busiest airport in the UK that serves many international destinations. It’s linked to the city centre by road and rail.
The city has two mainline rail stations: Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria. Both serve local services around the north as well as intercity services across the country.
Manchester also has the Metrolink tram that has eight lines and 99 stations. It’s now a primary way of getting around the city and offers cheap, reliable transport.
Buses are plentiful in the city. Some lines run 24/7, but not all do. Buses are also cheap and reliable, covering most inner-city areas.
Manchester also has good road links including the M60, M602, M67, A6, A56, A57 and local routes throughout Greater Manchester. While roads get busy during rush hour, getting around by car is easy.
