About the University of Central Lancashire

The University of Central Lancashire, UCLan, offers more than 400 undergraduate courses and over 200 postgraduate courses. It began life as The Institution For The Diffusion of Useful Knowledge back in 1828 and became a university in 1992.

The University of Central Lancashire is ranked 75th in the UK and is currently undergoing a £200 million expansion programme consisting of new buildings, a faith centre, engineering centre and new student centre.

The main campus is in the centre of Preston with smaller campuses in Burnley, Cumbria, Westlakes and Cyprus.

The University of Central Lancashire has around 25,000 students, almost 18,000 of which are undergraduates with the rest as postgraduates. The university has strong international ties, and there’s a high population of international students here.

The university is known for forensic science, fashion, film studies, social work, nursing, dentistry, community health and midwifery, engineering, management, global studies, pharmacy and psychology.

Student life in Preston

Preston is a good place to be a student. The main campus is in the city centre and our student accommodation is within walking distance. That makes it easy to enjoy the plentiful shopping, dining and entertainment options on offer here.

Preston is a decent sized city, but not too large or too crowded. Locals are friendly and getting around is simple.

There’s a lot to see and do here, including Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Broughton Cottage Museum, Ribble Steam Railway, Museum of Lancashire, Preston Cenotaph, St Walburge's Church, Avenham Park, Ashton Park, Queens Lancashire Regiment Museum, British Commercial Vehicle Museum, Fishergate, The Mall and many more.

There are a few nightclubs in town and plenty of bars, pubs, restaurants, cafes, music venues and other entertainments.

There are also lots of open green spaces to sit back and relax in the sunshine.

Transport in Preston

As a former industrial city, transport links into Preston are plentiful.

Arrive in Preston by air and you’ll need to use Liverpool or Manchester airports. Road and rail links join the three cities, so getting here should be no problem.

Preston has a large train station with intercity and local links. Both the West Coast Main Line and Avanti West Coast services stop here as well as national trains from around the country.

Preston has local and national buses running frequent services. Megabus and National Express both run services to and from Preston.

The city has good road links too with access to the M6, M61, M62, M60 and M65. Local roads are also plentiful and getting around is very straightforward.
