Aldgate

Birkbeck University of London is located in Bloomsbury and was originally established back in 1823. It’s a well-respected university that tends to rank well and is known for its Birkbeck Institute for the humanities, science, research, history, psychology, computer science and physics.

City, University of London is located in the heart of the capital and was originally founded in 1894 as the Northampton Institute. The modern university is known for the City Law School, the School of Community & Health Sciences and related fields.

Imperial College London was created by Prince Albert and merged the Royal College of Science, Royal School of Mines and City and Guilds College into one. The current college has a narrow focus on science, technology, medicine and business and is highly regarded across the world for those subjects.

King's College London is a long-established university with links to St Thomas’s Hospital in the centre of the city. It has five campuses: Strand, Guy’s, Waterloo, St Thomas’s and Denmark Hill. It is known for dentistry, oral and craniofacial sciences, life sciences, medicine, psychiatry and related fields.

London Metropolitan University, or London Met as it’s known, is a centrally located university with a great reputation. It includes the Guildhall School of Business and Law, School of Computing and Digital Media, School of Human Sciences, School of Social Professions, School of Social Sciences and the School of Art, Architecture and Design.

The London School of Economics is one of the most popular universities in London where all courses are massively oversubscribed. The university is well known for anthropology, criminology, social psychology, sociology and social policy, international relations and business-related courses.

Queen Mary University (QMUL) is an ancient establishment founded in 1785. It is based in east and central London with campuses across that area. The university is known for research, medicine, languages, English literature, dentistry, drama and materials technology.

The School of Oriental and African Studies is based in Bloomsbury, London, and is a world-leading institution for the study of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The university is known for teaching Asian, African and Middle Eastern languages, Arabic & Islamic Studies, Oriental Studies, law and social sciences.

University College London is the second largest university in the UK after the Open University. It was also Britain’s first secular university. It is known mainly for medicine, geography, education and training, anatomy and physiology, architecture, archaeology, psychology and pharmacology.

The University of the Arts London is made up of several colleges in London and only became a university in 2003. It includes the Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Arts.

Aldgate used to be a gate in London’s defensive wall, hence the name. It’s in the East End of London within Tower Hamlets. It’s a lively area of the city close to Spitalfields, Whitechapel and the City of London.

Aldgate forms part of the financial district and has a lot of banks, brokers and dealers within the area. It’s also close to London Fenchurch Street Station, Aldgate Tube and the Tower of London.

There’s a real mix of people and cultures in the area. There are many professionals living here but also students and everyday people. You’ll hear multiple languages on your way to class and be exposed to interesting cultures and individuals regularly.

It’s a lively, friendly, colourful part of London to live in and our student accommodation is in the heart of it.

London is well served by public transport including buses, London Underground and rail links. There’s even water transport on the River Thames too!

Aldgate is close to London Fenchurch Street and Liverpool Street Station for overground rail links.

Aldgate Tube links you to the main underground network and offers fast access across the capital. Aldgate East, Tower Hill, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel Tube stations are also nearby.

The closest airports are London City Airport to the south and London Heathrow and London Gatwick. All are accessible by rail.

Buses are plentiful, with some running 24 hours a day and linking you to rail or the tube.

Most of our student housing in Aldgate is minutes from a bus stop or tube station, so you’re never far from the action.

Aldgate is a lively, intriguing and colourful place to live. It has a real mix of people, buildings, cultures and character, and there’s never a dull moment.

You have glass buildings on one side and historic brick buildings and local landmarks on the other, with everything else in between.

There are lots of pubs, bars, cafés, galleries, museums, clubs, independent stores, shopping areas and parks around Aldgate, so you’ll always have something to do.

You’re also not far from Istituto Marangoni, Newcastle University London campus, Hult Business School, Coventry University London campus, King’s College London and Queen Mary University. If you’re studying somewhere else, you’re just a short tube ride away.

All our accommodation in Aldgate for students is within a short bus or tube ride from every university in the city, so you’re in good hands!

Aldgate is fairly centrally located, so has plenty to see and do, with more just a short ride away.

Highlights of Aldgate and surrounding areas includes Wilton’s Music hall, art exhibitions at the Truman Brewery, Old Spitalfields market, Brick Lane Market, Petticoat Lane Market, the Truman Brewery Markets, Genesis Cinema, Whitechapel Gallery, the Royal London Hospital, Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, Jack The Ripper Museum, Wilton's Music Hall, Cable Street Mural, Roman Wall, Tomb of the Unknown Roman Girl, Sky Garden, Monument to the Great Fire of London, the Gherkin and Devonshire Square.

Go slightly further afield and everything London has going on is available to enjoy.
