Southwark is the oldest established area of south London, having been first settled during the Roman era. It has been inhabited on and off since then before being firmly established by King Alfred in the 9th century.

He built fortifications south of the river to protect the city, which is where the name comes from.

Since then, the area has been steadily inhabited and evolved over time to become a lively, culturally diverse part of London.
