About Waterloo

Waterloo is an area of London that includes Southwark and Lambeth. It’s on the shores of the River Thames with St Thomas’ Hospital on one side and the Oxo Tower on the other.

Waterloo is a famous area of London in the borough of Lambeth, south of the River Thames. It’s an interesting part of the city, offering plenty to see and do as well as easy access to class.

The area was originally marshland called ‘Lambeth Marshe’, but was drained and built on in the 18th century.

Waterloo Bridge was constructed in 1817 and links north and south London. Waterloo Road was built around the same time as the bridge while Waterloo railway station was opened in 1848.

It’s one of the busiest railway stations in the country and serves the south of England.

It’s also home to the London Eye, Waterloo Bridge and a number of other famous landmarks including one of London’s busiest railway stations.

Transport in Waterloo

Getting around Waterloo is easy. You have bus, rail and Tube links as well as bike and walking routes.

Waterloo Station is the main rail hub, but there’s also London Waterloo East station for local routes.


 Waterloo Tube Station links Southwark and Lambeth North and crosses the river to Embankment.

Road links are mainly local routes, with the A201 to the south being the main arterial route for traffic.

It’s easy enough to drive around, but if you’re planning to stay in our student accommodation near Waterloo, we would suggest leaving the car at home.

There are river taxis that travel up and down the Thames, but these are more useful for leisure than commuting to class.

Student life in Waterloo

Housing is plentiful and is mainly Georgian and Victorian. There are plenty of shops, cafes, bars and easy access to some of the best clubs in the city, which makes it an ideal place to be a student.

BPP University London Waterloo is in the centre of the area next door to King's College London Waterloo Campus. Other colleges and universities are all a short bus or Tube ride away.

Waterloo is a relatively small area of London but packs in plenty of amenities.

Waterloo is home to The Cut, the Old Vic and Young Vic theatres, National Theatre, BFI Southbank, Hayward Gallery, Wolfson Gallery, Southbank Centre, BFI IMAX, London Eye, SEA LIFE Centre London Aquarium, The Graffiti Tunnel and The Vaults London.

It’s also a short distance from other highlights including the Imperial War Museum, Ministry of Sound, Immersive Gamebox, Great Scotland Yard, Whitehall, the Palace of Westminster, The National Gallery, Covent Garden and many city highlights.
