The gardens were built by the Russell family, the earls of Bedford as part of their possession of most of Bloomsbury back in the 18th century. Back then, ‘taking the air’ was a popular pastime, so a formal garden was created to allow the well-to-do of London a nice place to spend time in.

The square itself is just a small part of the area known as Russell Square but is obviously a fundamental part of it. With plenty of public transport options and lots of amenities, it’s definitely up there in terms of places to study!
